Canvas, upholstery, and metal around your boat can become stained from the elements, especially after heavy use. Below are tips and tricks for regular cleaning, and for deeper maintenance that can be done with annual spring cleaning before returning to the open water.

Canvas & Upholstery Care

To clean and protect canvas, using marine safe soap, rinse thoroughly. Scrub with a soft bristle brush, and completely dry before storing for extended periods of time or applying a water proofer such as 3M Scotchgard.

To clean and protect vinyl upholstery, use 3M Marine Vinyl Cleaner and a soft cotton or microfiber cloth. When storing long-term, bring removable parts inside or cover with provided canvas.

Metal Care

In marine environments, conditions that cause stainless and other metals to weather include saltwater, waterspots from rain or other rinsing, and general wear and tear from use. Rinsing with Salt Away after every use will help keep your metals looking like new. When rinsing, focus on the anchor & windlass, rails & rail bases, mast components, lazarette latches, boarding ladders, and outboard engines (if applicable).

To help prevent water spots, clean using a spotless rinse filter such as the CR Spotless system, or keep metals dry with a squeegee or chamois cloth. To clean water spots, use a metal polish and rag to remove water spots from rails and other stainless parts.

Fixing Gelcoat Scratches and Dings

Recommended tools and polish for polishing metal: Milwaukee M12 cordless polisher, microfiber or cotton cloths, Starbrite Chrome & Stainless polish, Garelick Eez-In Aluminum Chrome & Stainless Polish.

To remove metal staining, use gloves, Starbrite Chrome & Stainless Polish for lighter stains, or Mary Kate On & Off for heavier stains.

  1. Put on gloves.
  2. Rinse off the areas you’ll be cleaning.
  3. Dip a brush into the staining solution and apply to the metal stain.
  4. Immediately rinse with water. If staining is still apparent, repeat steps 1-4.
  5. Once staining is removed, recoat with your sealant of choice.
